osx - What is the proper approach of annotation and highlight in PDF file? -


first thing first, have lost annotations , notes in pdf files.

  • os: mac os x 10.10.2
  • pdf reader: skim 1.4.10
  • sync by: dropbox

after restoration time machine, found annotations , notes generated skim gone. find similar case here: http://osdir.com/ml/macosx.skim.user/2008-03/msg00013.html

the time machine restoration not involve dropbox, i.e. after restoration, files sync dropbox downloaded dropbox instead of restored time machine. skim notes still disappeared.

i have lost half year notes , don't know whether there chance find them. more concerned approach of making notes in pdf file. stop using skim due proprietary note format. worried if "preview.app" has risk of losing notes.

the questions are:

  1. is safe make notes in pdf file?
    • i.e. notes may lost due different implementations of notes, or during sync among ios , mac os
    • i think pdf format designed reading instead of editing, annotations may unwanted action pdf file.
  2. is there common standard of pdf notes?

annotations part of pdf (see iso 32000), , have been since pdf version 1.1 or so, corresponds acrobat 2 do. if done right, become part of pdf document when saving it.

because dealing annotations in pdf not simple task, vendors store annotations outside of pdf in proprietary format, skim seems do. not knowing how skim works, can not annotations stored. maybe makers of skim can here.

"pdf designed reading" urban legend, , should forgotten about. stated, annotations fundamental part of pdf, , not "unwanted". way annotations implemented specified in iso 32000 (that should answer question 2).

now, tools use… considering shortcomings of preview.app (improperly writing pdfs), suggested not use preview.app when files have written (as had happen when add annotations).

for osx , windows, "gold standard" pdf viewer adobe reader xi. ios, adobe reader ios usable long annotating documents; forms , interactive documents, pdfexpert readdle current leader of pack.

How to group boxplot outliers in gnuplot -
