eclipse - no archetypes in default local catalog when creating new maven project -

using eclipse java ee ide web developers. version: kepler service release 2 build id: 20140224-0627.

when select file -> new -> maven project -> use default workspace location. following dialog. local default catalog empty:

enter image description here

i click configure button, , click on maven architecture catalogs. page says:

location of catalog files

the archetype plugin knows default internal catalog. knows local , remote catalogs.

local represents ~/.m2/archetype-catalog.xml catalog file.

remote represents http://repo.maven.apache.org/maven2/archetype-catalog.xml catalog file.

the archetype plugin can read catalogs filesystem/http providing path/url of catalog file or of directory containing archetype-catalog.xml file.

if execute following on command line (i have everyhing under tools directory, eclipse, maven, wildfly, etc.)

c:\tools>dir archetype-catalog.xml /s

it doesn't find file.

so default local catalog doen't exist! why that?

i have downloaded http://repo.maven.apache.org/maven2/archetype-catalog.xml, don't know put become default local catalog, because don't know ~/.m2/archetype-catalog.xml file path is. tried c:\tools\eclipse\.m2\archetype-catalog.xml , several other locations without luck. sorry, i'm new java eco-system , eclipse ide.

i have latest m2eclipse found here: http://download.eclipse.org/technology/m2e/releases

edit: figured out ~ means on ~/.m2/archetype-catalog.xml. have put archetype-catalog.xml c:\users\my.user.name\.m2\ , voilĂ  default local catalog full of archetypes. still. why didn't exist in first place? annoying.

the archetype catalogs used eclipse can found in window -> preferences, in section maven -> archetypes. if no catalog listed there, can add official maven remote catalog: http://repo.maven.apache.org/maven2/archetype-catalog.xml
